Resumen
Nacido y criado en Newcastle, Drinkwater estudió en la National Art School de Sídney (2001), antes de emprender una prolífica carrera marcada por la curiosidad, la experimentación y un profundo interés por la materialidad y el gesto.
Desde su primera exposición individual en 2004, Drinkwater ha presentado más de treinta exposiciones individuales en Australia y en el extranjero. En 2019, su obra fue objeto de una importante exposición retrospectiva, The Sea Calls Me by Name, en la Newcastle Art Gallery, una celebración de su relación perdurable con los paisajes costeros y las comunidades que continúan inspirando su obra.
La práctica artística de Drinkwater trasciende el estudio y abarca la colaboración interdisciplinar. En 2016, la Facultad de Ingeniería de Monash University le encargó la creación de un relieve escultórico de quince metros, instalado de forma permanente en el campus de Clayton de la universidad. Al año siguiente, colaboró con la firma australiana de moda ALPHA60 para desarrollar una colección cápsula que trasladaba su lenguaje pictórico al ámbito textil.
En 2022, la obra de Drinkwater fue incluida en Singing In Unison – Artists Need to Create on the Same Scale that Society Has the Capacity to Destroy, una exposición de referencia comisariada por Phong H. Bui y Cal McKeever para The Brooklyn Rail. Presentada junto a artistas como Sean Scully, Julian Schnabel, Lauren Bon, Ron Gorchov y Dorothea Rockburne, esta inclusión confirmó su participación en un diálogo artístico internacional más amplio. Ese mismo año, colaboró con los coreógrafos Skip Willcox y Belle Beasely y con el compositor Joseph Franklin en Storm Approaching Wangi – and Other Desires, un ballet contemporáneo encargado por el Multi Arts Pavilion, MIMA Lake Macquarie. Para este proyecto, Drinkwater diseñó la escenografía y el vestuario, además de participar como intérprete en la escena final.
En 2023, su trayectoria de mitad de carrera estuvo marcada por dos importantes exposiciones retrospectivas: Passage, en el Northern Centre for Contemporary Art (NCCA) de Darwin, y At Mid Career, en la Drill Hall Gallery de la Australian National University, en Canberra, comisariada por Terence Maloon.
La obra de Drinkwater ha sido presentada en exposiciones colectivas en toda Australia y a nivel internacional, incluyendo Berlín, Leipzig, Nueva York y Londres. Ha recibido numerosos reconocimientos, entre ellos la Marten Bequest Scholarship (2011), la Brett Whiteley Travelling Scholarship (2014) y el John Olsen National Art School Life Drawing Prize (2002). Asimismo, ha sido finalista en varias ocasiones en importantes premios nacionales como el Wynne Prize, el Sulman Prize y el Dobell Drawing Prize.
James ha realizado residencias internacionales en Leipzig, Titjikala, Kenia, París, Tahití y Ubud; experiencias que han impregnado su obra de un marcado sentido del movimiento y del lugar. Sus obras forman parte de importantes colecciones públicas y privadas, entre ellas las de la Art Gallery of New South Wales, HOTA Gallery, Bendigo Art Gallery, Newcastle Art Gallery, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, Artbank, Macquarie Bank, Monash University y la Schnabel Collection de Nueva York, entre otras.
Más recientemente, su obra Sunday in Albi fue adquirida por la colección de Blanca y Borja Thyssen-Bornemisza para el Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza.
